Why the spec sheet matters more than the marketing copy
Almost every blank apparel listing uses the same words: soft, premium, heavyweight. Those words don't tell you much you can act on. The numbers and construction terms underneath them do. Whether you're comparing blanks for a print shop, a private label line, or your own closet, here's what the terms on a spec sheet actually mean and why they matter.
GSM: the number that predicts almost everything else
GSM (grams per square meter) measures fabric weight, and it's the single best predictor of how a shirt drapes, how opaque it is under ink, and how long it survives repeated washing. A lot of commodity blanks sit in the 4.2 to 5oz range to hit a price point. Our tees and tanks run 5.5oz / 185 GSM in 100% combed cotton, heavy enough to hold its shape on the hanger and resist show-through when you print dark ink on a light shirt, without tipping into stiff or overly warm territory.
Combed vs. carded cotton
Carded cotton is spun straight from raw fiber, so shorter fibers and small bits of husk stay in the yarn, which is what causes the slubby, slightly rough hand you feel on cheaper tees. Combed cotton goes through an extra step that removes short fibers and impurities before spinning, leaving a smoother, stronger, more uniform yarn. It costs more to produce, and it's also why a combed-cotton tee still looks clean after its twentieth wash instead of pilling and thinning out.
Knit terms worth knowing: mélange, and the blend ratio on the label
When a spec sheet lists a blend like 87% nylon / 13% spandex, that ratio is telling you the fabric's job. Construction details that separate a shirt from a garment
A three-button placket costs more to construct than a simple crew neck because it requires a facing, interfacing, and clean buttonhole work, but it's also what makes a polo collar sit flat instead of curling. Structured cuffs and hems on a long sleeve tee use extra binding and stitching to resist the stretched-out, wavy edge you get on a cheaper knit after a few washes. A drop-shoulder cut, like our Box Cut Tee, is a deliberate pattern choice for a relaxed, boxy silhouette, not the same pattern as a set-in sleeve tee just sewn looser. None of these are cosmetic. They're the difference between a shirt that reads intentional and one that reads like it was made to a price.
One more term: tear-away label
If you're sourcing blanks to decorate or private label, check whether the label is tear-away or sewn permanent. A tear-away label lets a decorator or reseller remove the brand tag cleanly and drop in their own, with no rework, stray thread, or ghost stitch holes left behind. It's a small construction choice that either saves a decorator a step or costs them one.
Reading a spec sheet from now on
Next time a blank is described as premium, heavyweight, or soft, ask for the GSM, the fiber and blend, and the construction details behind the finish. Those are the terms that actually predict how the shirt performs, not the adjective on the listing.
