Why DTG Is Pickier Than Screen Printing or Embroidery
Direct-to-garment printing works by depositing water-based ink straight into the fibers of a fabric, not on top of it the way a screen print sits or the way embroidery replaces the surface entirely. That means DTG quality depends almost entirely on what the shirt is made of. Natural fibers like cotton absorb and hold that ink; synthetic fibers resist it, which is why the same artwork can look crisp on one blank and dull, cracked, or prone to peeling on another even from the same printer, same settings, same ink.
What Makes Our Tees and Tanks DTG-Ready
Our Classic Fit, Box Cut, and tank styles run 100% combed cotton at 5.5 oz (185 GSM). Combed cotton strips out the shorter, uneven fibers that raw cotton keeps, leaving a smoother, more uniform surface for ink to sit into evenly. It's also why the fabric feels less scratchy against the skin. At 185 GSM the fabric has enough substance to hold a full-chest or oversized print without puckering or the ink telegraphing through to the back. Side-seamed construction keeps the body of the shirt free of a center seam, so large graphics print flat without a ridge running through the middle of the design.
The Oversized Hoodie: Enough Cotton to Hold a Print, Enough Poly to Survive the Wash
The hoodie's 87% cotton / 13% polyester blend leans cotton-heavy specifically so it still takes DTG ink well on large back and chest placements, while the polyester content keeps the oversized shape from stretching out of proportion over repeated washes with a real risk with a 100% cotton fleece at this weight.
Where DTG Isn't the Right Call: The Performance Polo
The Performance Polo runs 87% nylon / 13% spandex, a knit built for stretch and recovery, not ink absorption. Standard water-based DTG doesn't bond to synthetic fiber the way it bonds to cotton, and a print on this style is more likely to crack or lift early especially with the flexing this fabric is designed for. For this style, embroidery on the chest is the more durable call, and it fits the garment's construction better anyway: the three-button placket and structured collar already read as a finished, tailored piece, which embroidery reinforces rather than fights. If a logo needs to be printed rather than stitched, a screen print run with a synthetic-compatible ink system will hold up longer than DTG will on this fabric.
